| This set of images were taken by
Steve McGinley and are of an exposed section
of the mine fire. He took these on the
eastern end of Centralia heading down towards
Big Mine Run. At the time you could actually
hear a roar like a blast furnace coming from
the hole and at night you could see the veins
of fire on the vertical face of the mountain.
Heading north to
the intersection of Rt.61 and Rt.42 you make a
right. left would be towards Mt. Carmel and
straight would be towards Bloomsburg. Making
the right will take you towards Big Mine Run.
When you leave town and just after the hard
right hand turn "dead man's turn" there is an
area on the right hand side of the road as you
start to go down hill towards Big Mine Run.
