The Abandoned PA Turnpike Tunnels circa 1981/82
With the widespread popularity of abandoned Turnpike exploration, what is unique about these photos from 20 years ago is that many of the original artifacts (lettering and lane stripping) still existed at the entrances to the three tunnels. With the widespread popularity of abandoned Turnpike exploration, these photos capture the exterior of the abandoned tunnels closer to their operable form than they are today.

The abandoned highway to end all abandoned highways
When the Pennsylvania Turnpike first opened from Middlesex to Irwin in 1940, the new toll road was truly "America's Tunnel Highway." A trip from one end to the other would take a motorist through seven different tunnels: (from east to west) Blue Mountain, Kittatinny, Tuscarora, Sideling Hill, Ray's Hill, Allegheny, and Laurel Hill. While the length of the Turnpike was built as a four-lane expressway, the tunnels could only accommodate one lane of traffic in each direction. Tracking the South Pennsylvania Railroad
The real history of the Pennsylvania Turnpike is not when it was built in 1938-40 but the actual abandoned railroad alignment that it was to have followed. The facts about where to find the Vanderbilt railroad alignment is sometimes more interesting then the building of the turnpike or when it opened. Get to the root of the turnpikes history by visiting southpennrailroad.com
