New England 4 Wheelers
The New England 4 Wheelers, Inc. is a family oriented four-wheel drive club created to promote the sport of recreational four wheel driving on primitive roads. Vehicles are limited to Jeep type sport utility vehicles that are narrow, lightweight and agile like Jeep CJ, Yj, TJ, Cherokees, Suzukies, Defender 90s, Scouts, and other vehicles of these genera. Vehicle size is limited to 70 inches at its widest point. There is no limit to wheelbase length, but it is recommended not to exceed 106 inches due to the break over angle. A tow hook is mandatory in the front of the vehicle. A hook or attachment point is required for the rear. All vehicle MUST carry a tow strap with loops (no metal hooks) rated at least 20,000 pounds, at least 20 feet in length, a 40 channel CB radio, fire extinguisher, full size spare tire, and first aid kit. Metal whip antennas are not allowed. Maximum antenna length is not to exceed six feet in length. Open topped vehicles must have a roll bar. All vehicles must have seat belts for all occupants. Minimum tire size is 31 inches. Maximum tire size allowed is 38 inches. A spare tire of equal diameter to your road tires is mandatory.
We started out as a stock or slightly modified Jeep-only club, and evolved into a hardcore 4-wheel drive club consisting primarily of rock-crawling buggies, heavily modified Jeeps, and other mid-sized 4X4's. The trails we frequent are hardcore to extreme, requiring lots of ground clearance, big tires, heavy duty drive trains, and the expectation that you may damage your vehicle.
New England 4 Wheelers was started in December of 1988, and incorporated in 1993. As a club we are interested mainly in 4-wheeling. We found it best to concentrate on private land use as opposed to trying to work with the local governments. We are a bare bones club with low dues, which are used to fund our annual BBQ, and some occasional swag for the membership. We recreate off-road only with the permission of the landowners, and will not trespass. Over the years, we have developed a great rapport with the owners of these properties.
We belong to a larger organization, The Northeast Association of 4-Wheel Drive Clubs. Within this entity is a large group of clubs in our region that share properties with one-another, exchange information, and work toward the betterment of the sport we call 4-wheelin'.
