Bird In Hand Village,
Pennsylvania
Lancaster Amish CountryThe community of Bird-in-Hand
was founded in 1734. The legend of the naming of Bird-in-Hand
concerns the time when the Old Philadelphia Pike was surveyed
between Lancaster and Philadelphia. According to legend two road
surveyors discussed whether they should stay at their present
location or go on to the town of Lancaster. One of them
supposedly said, "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush,"
and so they stayed.
Today a visit to the Village of Bird-in-Hand, population
approx 300, is like returning to a bygone era. Visiting
this quaint little town you will find small, friendly shops that
line the main street, regional homegrown Lancaster County foods
and places to stay where you'll feel like you have stepped back
in time. Visit the old-fashioned Farmer's Market in the
center of town where you can buy fresh foods, handmade crafts
and homegrown produce.
The town holds annual events that include Fire and Ambulance
Volunteer Appreciation Week, Bird-in-Hand Community Days and
Amish Marketplace, and festive Christmas events in early
December.
