Anthracite Museum of Mining

The Anthracite Museum of Mining within Knoebels Amusement Park is a great place to revisit the history of the Pennsylvania coal mining region. Knoebels itself is is located in the heart of the Anthracite coal region in the PA and the air conditioned museum is full of mine era artifacts, mining tools and equipment, stories, displays and great information depicting what life was like in the coal mines of Pennsylvania.

Among the many items on display In the museum you'll find things like old laminated, hand written accident reports from the coal mines going back a hundred years that you can pick up, examine and read. You'll also find maps of the region outlining mining communities and mining operations during specific time frames.

There are also many displays that demonstrate mining methods and conditions both in full scale and in scale model, which can give you a pretty realistic glimpse of what it's like to work in a coal mine.

Coal Mining Regional Maps

Outside of the museum you can examine an old steam locomotive, and a mine shaft personnel carrier. The kids can have fun panning for treasures in much the same way gold seekers would in the west. The Anthracite Museum of Mining is a great place to escape the heat of the day and experience a little bit of history at the same time.

The History of Knoebels

Since 1926, Knoebels Grove has been continually growing and changing. In the back of the Anthracite Museum of Mining, Knoebels has set up a fascinating pictorial timeline of it's own 80 year history. From significant events to the introduction of each ride that is or has been at the park including when each of the historical rides became part of the park and where they originated from.
