Pictures and information gathered from various magazines, books, and places around the web (too numerous too mention). Some information on older Jeeps is vague and inconsistent. This list covers the most common Jeeps one might come across, there are some unusual models that were manufactured not listed here. (not enough room!) Wrangler TJ (97-) Chrysler. Round Headlights, turn signal lights on the front fenders, wheelbase 94", coil spring suspension adopted from the Grand Cherokee. No locking hubs and no front axle disconnect. Front airbags. Optional Dana 44 rear axle. Factory hard top option. Rear seat is wider. Special models offered Sport and Sahara.
99 TJ

Engines - 4cyl(2.5L), 6cyl(4.0L).
Transmissions - 5sp(AX-5, AX15, NV3550), Auto (904, 999).
Transfer case - NP231.
Front axle - Dana30, Rear axle - Dana35C, Dana44.

Wrangler YJ (86-95) Chrysler. Square Headlights, wheelbase 94", squared front fenders. Wider frame than CJ. Roll bar extends to windshield, in 1992 the rear part of the roll bar is a squared shape to accommodate rear sholder seat belts. 86 to 93 models have disconnecting front axle. 95 Model uses small rubber nubs instead of hoops on the hood as a rest for the windshield when folded down. Spare tire attached to tail-gate. Tail-gate swings out. Car-like dashboard. Similar body to CJ-7 which is interchangable with slight modification. Special models offered Laredo, Sahara, Islander, and Renegade.

Engines - 4cyl(2.5L), 6cyl(4.0L, 4.2L).
Transmissions - 5sp(AX-5, BA10/5), Auto (904, 999).
Transfer case - NP 207, NP231.
Front axle - Dana30, Rear axle - Dana35C.

CJ-8 (81-86) AMC. Also known as the Scrambler. Round Headlights, Wheelbase 104" and rear body is similar to a small truck which adds to a greater rear overhang. Factory fiberglass hard top cab and steel hard doors. Front disc brakes. Factory front sway bar. Only 27,792 were produced. 81 CJ-8 Scrambler

Engines - 4cyl(AMC150, GM151), 6cyl(258), V8(304).
Transmissions - 4sp(T4, SR4), 5sp(T5), Auto(999, 904)
Transfer case was the Dana 300.
Front axle - Dana 30, Rear axle - AMC20.

CJ-7 (76-86) AMC. Round Headlights, wheelbase 94", rounded front fenders, door opening is a U shape. First CJ available with an automatic trans and disc brakes, also available with A/C. Available with a factory hard top option. Fully boxed frame which widens in the rear. Front disc brake option in 77, standard 78 and up. 76-78 have 11" rear drum brakes, 79 and up have 10". Locking steering column with optional tilt wheel. Axles widened in 82 to increase stability. Factory front sway bar. Special models offered Levi's edition, Laredo, Golden Eagle, Limited, and Renegade. 82 CJ-7 Limited

Transmissions - 3sp(T150), 4sp(T18, T4, SR4), 5sp(T5), Auto(T400, 999, 904).

CJ-5 (76-83) AMC. Round Headlights, wheelbase 84", rounded front fenders, door opening is an inverted S shape. Windshield more sloped and flat accross the top. Frame widens after the rear of the front wheels. Fully boxed frame which widens in the rear. Front disc brake option in 77, standard 78 and up. 76-78 have 11" rear drum brakes, 79 and up have 10". Locking steering column with optional tilt wheel. Factory front sway bar. Special models offered Levi's edition, Laredo, Golden Eagle and Renegade. 82 CJ-5

Transmissions - 3sp(T150), 4sp(T18, T176, SR4).
Transfer cases - Dana20, Dana300.

CJ-5 (72-75) AMC. Round Headlights, wheelbase 84", rounded front fenders, door opening is an inverted S shape. First Jeep with Saginaw steering and optional power steering. Windshield angle steeper and wiper motor on the outside also windshield frame has a rounded top. Frame is straight front to back. Special models offered Super Jeep and Renegade.

Engines - 6cyl(232, 258), V8(304).
Transmissions - 3sp(T15), 4sp(T18).
Transfer case - Dana20.
Front axle - Dana30, Rear axle - Dana44.

CJ-6 (55-75) Kaiser, AMC. Round headlights, wheelbase (55-71,101", 71-75,104"), rounded front fenders, door opening is an inverted S shape. Jeep is essentially a CJ-5 with a piece added to the body behind the door opening. Kaiser, AMC. Windshield wipers top mounted (51-68), bottom mounted (69-71) Windshield angle steeper and wiper motor on the outside(69-71). Windshield frame has a rounded top. Frame is straight front to back. Special models Tuxedo Park, 462. Eric and Sharon Lawson's CJ-5

CJ-3B/M606 (53-64) Willys, Kaiser. Flat fenders, 81" wheelbase, hood hight 10.5". Bottom

mounted windshield wipers.

Transmissions - 3sp(T90).
Transfer Case - Dana18.
Front axle - Dana25, Dana27, Rear axle - Dana44.
